Writer's Workshop:
In Writer's Workshop, we will follow the same schedule everyday. Students will keep their own Writing Folder in their desks and will have pockets for "work in progress" and "finished work".
Mini Lesson- First we start off with a mini lesson. This lesson can last anywhere between 5-10 minutes. During these mini lessons, the children see me as writer. I will model strong writing while sharing life stories.
Work Time- This part of the workshop can last between 30-40 minutes. Students will work independently and practice the skill taught during the mini lesson. During this time I conference with students and give them compliments on their writing. We also brainstorm goals that each student feels they can improve on. At the end of work time, we will chart our writing stamina on a class bar graph.
Share Time- During the last 5 minutes of Writer's Workshop, we gather in a circle to share our hard work. Children practice being respectful listeners and think of compliments and/or questions to ask their peers about their writing pieces.
Reading:
We will be following a reading program called Journeys. This reading program is aligned with Fulton County's Balanced Literacy Model. Each week we will read a story from our textbooks. We will learn new vocabulary, decoding strategies and skills such as inferencing and predicting. During the reading block, I will meet with 3 different reading groups for Guided Reading. Students will complete 3 rotations during this block of time: teacher table (Guided Reading), centers, and seatwork. Seatwork will be differentiated based on each group's ability levels and mastery of reading skills. Some examples of seatwork tasks include: comprehension practice, phonics practice, grammar practice, or independent reading.
